Published on Page 226 in the chapter "The Golden Age, 1920-1929." Before Lou Gehrig's Disease, there was Ross Youngs' disease. "Pep" began to falter in the 1924 World Series, retired two years later in just his 10th season, and quickly wasted away until his death in 1927 at age 30. There has never been a finer artistic tribute to the mighty yet oft-unsung legacy of Youngs than this dazzling three-quarter-length portrait. Because of Dick Perez's unwavering commitment to honor every last HOFer, he has devoted more blood, sweat and paint to Cooperstown's least-known enshrinees than all other baseball artists combined—and our national pastime's grand history is the better for his efforts.
