Taking full advantage of the dimensions at the Polo Grounds, Hall of Famer Mel Ott clubbed 323 of his 511 round-trippers at that Harlem-based venue. In 1938, however, the disparity wasn’t so great in terms of where Ott launched his league-leading 36 home runs (20 home, 16 road). For his efforts, Ott was awarded this magnificent trophy. Standing 16”-tall, the multi-tiered prize features (3) wooden and (1) marble platforms, all of which support a metallic cup on which a metal batter figurine stands. Affixed to the lower base, three metallic name plates showcase engraved finery, while a fourth plate has an engraved legend reading “B.B.W.A.A. Presents To Melvin Ott – Nat. Lea. Homerun Crown 1938.” Rust/oxidation affects the cup, while the figurine (incorrectly portrayed as a right-handed hitter) appears to be a replacement.
