Familiar images that define Ty Cobb include spikes aimed at helpless infielders, hands spread apart in the batter’s box and deadpan expressions in the heat of competition. As the years wore on, however, Cobb mellowed to the point of making sizable charitable contributions from his rural home in Reno, Nevada. Contrasting from the popular depictions of the fiery Georgian, these original photographs portray a peaceful man enjoying his retirement. The black-and-white Type I snapshots measure approximately 4x4. Four of the photos show Cobb in singular poses (three of the Hall of Famer in a chair on his porch; and one of a bespectacled Cobb standing beside an automobile smoking a cigarette). The photos date to the period that spanned Cobb’s second marriage (1949-1956), as two additional photos respectively feature his Reno house and his spouse, Frances Fairbairn Cass (holding a shotgun!) The photos, incidentally, are in spectacular condition with no creases and original gloss still radiant. The four Cobb photos come with individual PSA/DNA full photo LOAs attesting to their authenticity as original photos.
