Description

Many professional sports leagues have come and gone over the years, in challenge to the four major sport leagues that are still going strong. Typically, the best way to recall these vanquished upstarts, is by collecting their memorabilia, which is always much scarcer than contemporary period MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL related materials. From the short-lived American Basketball League, comes this super-tough group of (3) programs. Planned by Abe Saperstein, with support from George Steinbrenner and Paul Cohen, the eight-team ABL competed for just one full season in 1961-62, and another partial season in 1962-63.

All (3) of the offered programs were issued by the San Francisco Saints, for games during the 1961-62 season. These vintage rarities are all solid examples, with tight spines and clean covers, averaging (VG-EX). Some of the stars listed in the lineups include Sylvester Blye in his rookie campaign, Ken Sears, George Yardley, Bill Spivey, Gene Brown, and MLB pitcher Gene Conley, whose name is written in one of the lineups, as number "22" for the New York Tapers. Including the Saints and their three opponents, these programs represent half of the ABL's teams. Featured editions are: 12/26, 28/61 Saints vs. Los Angeles Jets with Gene Brown cover photo; 1/26, 28/62 Saints vs. Kansas City Steers with Larry Beck cover; and 1/31, 2/2/62 Saints vs. New York Tapers with Ken Sears cover.
